Many times situation demands us to connect our USB’s to public computers like cyber café pc, college, office computers. This can be very dangerous if the public computers are infected with some virus or malware, so in such situations a portable antivirus for USB can come very handy. You can simply carry this software in your pendrive and when you are finished with the data transfer simply run it to scan your drive and then safely connect your USB to your home computer. Microsoft Safety Scanner is one such portable Antivirus software from Microsoft. This is a free antivirus software, always updated with latest virus definitions, and requires no installation. All you need to do is to copy the program exe file “msert.exe” to your USB and simply run the file when you need to scan the USB or the whole computer. If the program detects any malware it automatically quarantines the file there by cleaning your USB drive.
There are many scanning modes available in the software in which you can specify the scanning depth, for example you can select a through scan in which the software will scan all the system files for any virus or you can also select a quick scan where it will only scan the highly vulnerable folders and files. This can be useful for quickly scanning your computer as this option is very fast.
Microsoft Safety Scanner is available both in 32 bit and 64 bit versions. The program expires after 10 days but you can always re-download it with the latest virus definitions. This software is good only as a Portable Antivirus for USB and I won’t advise you to use it as an alternative to a complete security system.

How does its detection compare to ClamWin which, for the longest time, was the standard portable antivirus?
