Myth Buster: Green Computing http://www.geekrevealed.com/2012/05/myth-buster-green-computing.html http://www.geekrevealed.com/2012/05/myth-buster-green-computing.html#comments Thu, 17 May 2012 02:11:41 +0000 Anieee http://www.geekrevealed.com/?p=2515 Go Green has become a trend now. Go Green has become a trend now. Everyone around us is trying to follow this trend. But my question is that “If we are really doing the right things to preserve energy while going green?”

If you have answered my question as yes, then this post will really be an eye-opener for you. Today in this article I am going to bust myths related to green computing.

Where from these myths come ?

Before busting the myths I would like to provide more insight on how come these myths or misconceptions come into the market.

As you all would know Computing Technology is improving day by day and there are several companies that are dedicatedly researching on how to make computing more eco-friendly. However in contrast to their honest efforts there are few black sheep that try to take advantage of such honest efforts and try to sell their crappy products under the label of being eco-friendly.  So, we all need to be aware of the facts and misconceptions related to green computing.

Myth Buster Green Computing

Myth 1:

Myth: Paperless means Being Green

Myth Description:  The term “paperless” means that there would not be any physical use of paper. People will keep everything on the web or on their computers.

Truth: Paperless term was actually coined long time back when people actually wanted their offices to be computerized.  Most of the paper these days comes from recycling. Hence instead of being completely paperless you could simply start using recycled paper to preserve the energy. You could also try to read or review the documents or emails instead of printing them.

Verdict: Busted.

Myth 2:

Myth: Turning off the computers repeatedly damages its circuit.

Myth Description: I really don’t know how, but somehow most of us really think that regularly turning off and on a computer will harm the circuit board of computer. Another weird thing is that some people that think lot of power is used every time you switch on a computer.

Truth: Well the truth is that it’s another myth. Various manufacturers have confirmed that there are hardly any damages caused to the computer circuit board if you switch it on and off regularly. Secondly the myth that computer consume lot of power when switched on is out of the scope of the scientific theories.

Verdict: Busted.

Myth 3:

Myth: Computers consume less energy when they are using screensavers or they are in idle mode.

Myth Description: I have seen many people and organisations who have been a prey of this myth. There are many people who think that if their computers are idle or are having a screen saver then a lot of energy is saved.

Truth: I guess the term “SAVER” in Screen Saver misleads the people in thinking that it will save energy. But the truth is that a screensaver also consumes considerable amount of energy although it’s slightly less than when computer is actively used. Likewise, when the computer is in idle mode it also consumes the considerable amount of energy. There is no mechanism which translates that a computer using screensaver or in idle mode will cut down the electrical energy supplied to computer.

If you really want to save energy then you could follow any of the following suggestions provided below:

  • Using computer in Stand By or Sleep Mode saves energy.
  • You could also change your computer setting so that if it’s not used for a defined set of time then it automatically turns off the computer or else goes in sleep mode.
Verdict: Busted.

Myth 4:

Myth: Using Blackle search engine Saves Energy

Myth Description: There are many people who believe that using Blackle search engine will save energy.

Truth: This is another myth. Blackle was introduced to remind people to think about saving energy. Although using just Blackle would not make a significant energy save. You could save the energy using some tips suggested below:

1)      Use dull or rather dark backgrounds or decrease the brightness to save energy.

2)      Purchase computer that are compliant with “Energy Star”. Please note that “Energy Star” is a certification which tells you that your computing device is authentic and low power consuming as compared to those which are not compliant.

3)      If possible try to use Flat Screen monitors as it consumes less energy as compared to a CRT monitor.

Verdict: Busted.

This was all about the various myths related to Green Computing. Stay tuned for other myth busters coming up in the next week.

I think somehow we all are stuck in our day to day life in finding out what is fact and what is fiction or myth over internet. Today, in this article I will be busting some of the common myths that are related to Data Security on Internet.

Data Security on Internet

Myth 1:

Myth: Complexity of Passwords is directly proportional to the Security of your online assets.

Myth Description: Many people believe that their online assets are safe on Internet as long as they have complex passwords. By complex passwords I mean something that is containing more than 5 characters, a non-dictionary word and non-alphanumeric characters.

Truth: I am afraid but this was true only in old times, where in Brute Force Attack (The attempt to crack correct password by trying all permutations and combinations of characters) was limited to specific length of characters.

Now the time has changed and the hackers over Internet can crack your complex and lengthy passwords using their fully equipped tools. I would like to highlight that the most common problem with lengthy and complex passwords is that they are hard to remember.

The remedy to overcome this myth is to change your complex passwords frequently.  There is a second approach that will hold good only for those cases where you have control over the login mechanism such that you could lock the account after a pre-set number of login retries. The best example that we could quote here is that of an ATM Machine which locks your Credit or Debit Card after 3 incorrect passwords retires.

Verdict: Busted

Myth 2:

Myth: Antivirus will save your computer from all Viruses.

Myth Description: Nowadays almost all computers are pre-loaded with Anti-Virus Software. Many people think that having an antivirus software on their computer protects them from all sorts of issues.

Truth: I am afraid but this is partially true. You will be surprised to know that there are approximately 70,000 viruses created every single day.

[Reference: http://eugene.kaspersky.com/2011/10/28/number-of-the-month-70k-per-day/]

This means that your Antivirus can not protect you unless its updated daily. Your Antivirus will surely save you from all viruses if its databases are up to date. So, you need to update your Antivirus daily to get protected from the newly created viruses.

Verdict: Busted

Myth 3:

Myth:Typing your password from Keyboard is safe

Myth Description: Mostly all of us use wired keyboards. When we type in our passwords, the passwords gets hidden by asterisk (*) character which gives us a feeling that our passwords are safe and our data is protected.

Truth: You will be shocked to know that there is a mechanism using which hackers can get to know which keys have been pressed on your keyboard.

Wired Keyboards are not at all safe. Hackers can easily know what you are typing using KeyLogging Mechanism. Keyloggers are malicious codes that have the capability to detect which key has been pressed on the basis of the ASCII Code associated with it. The worst thing is that you would not even know that something is decrypting your passwords.

Please note that this not only decrypts your passwords, but it could also decrypt your sensitive information like, Credit Card Number or Bank Account Number.

I would suggest you to use On-Screen Virtual Keyboards for typing your sensitive information. You could also read this article to shop online safely.

Verdict: Busted

Myth 4:

Myth: Data will be protected with the use of Encrypted Data Channel

Myth Description: Eavesdropping was the greatest threat in those good old days of Internet. This threat lead to the advancement of using Encrypted Data Channels like SSL,SSH, HTTP,HTTPS.

Truth: However this is also partially true; using Encrypted Data Channels alone would not protect your data. Moreover statistics have clearly shown that there is a very limited amount of data that is lost to eavesdropping.

Channel Encryption is only a small part of protecting your sensitive data. It would not work alone. In order to make data channel encryption work you need comprehensive security policy and regular audits.

Verdict: Busted

Myth 5:

Myth: Storing Data on Cloud is insecure.

Myth Description: Ever since the launch of Cloud Computing people have got mixed responses to the data storage on Cloud. There are many people who think that storing Data on Cloud is unsafe and insecure. After all, “Cloud” itself means that your precious data is floating around somewhere. Am I Right? Well yes, this is a normal reaction.

Truth: Cloud Computing is the safest place to store your data online. After storing the data on Cloud, its fully encrypted and Cloud Computing gives you the control to access Data Centre and download your uploaded files without any infringement.

Verdict: Busted

This was all about the various myths related to Data Security on Internet. Stay tuned for other myth busters coming up in the next week.

Tinted Windows That Can Generate Electricity http://www.geekrevealed.com/2012/04/tinted-windows-that-can-generate-electricity.html http://www.geekrevealed.com/2012/04/tinted-windows-that-can-generate-electricity.html#comments Tue, 24 Apr 2012 02:30:49 +0000 Ankit http://www.geekrevealed.com/?p=1864 It has just become a daily affair that we read about many interesting advancements in the area of Solar Power harnessing. It has just become a daily affair that we read about many interesting advancements in the area of Solar Power harnessing. But if you have a closer look at it you might find that these inventions look stronger and better on paper rather than in real life. But this time a Germany based company, Heliatek has invented semi transparent tinted window glass sheets that can generate electricity.

Tinted windows that can generate electric

Visualize the use of such an invention in cars or in homes. On one side they protect you from the extra bright light and also at the same time it can generate electricity for you. Isn’t it great? You could charge your cell phone or the car battery using it.

Technicalities of the Process:

Actually, the concept that Heliatek used in making these tinted windows is not altogether new. A similar method is used to develop touchscreens. But Heliatek has modified the process by using shorter chains of organic molecules deposited on the flexible backing of the cell. These shorter molecules are called as oligomers. Oligomers have a capability of selective light absorption, i.e. it is possible to tune them to absorb light waves of a single wavelength. It is interesting to note that theses tinted window cells have a life span much higher than the regular solar cells and it is only because of the use of oligomers.

Efficiency:

The new idea of using Oligomers has proved to be a right choice for Heliatek. The right usage of oligomers allows the Heliatek panels to be tuned for absorbing a particular wavelength of light better than others. So, it allows having a selective absorption pattern also.

The major downside of Heliatek panels is that they are only able to convert 9.8% of the light falling on them to electricity, which is quiet low in comparison to regular solar panels which can convert 15-18% of the light falling on them to electricity. But the company has said that they are working hard to bring up the efficiency to at least 12%.

Ability to work in low light condition:

Despite of the fact that efficiency of Heliatek panels is quiet low when compared to normal solar panels but it can work better than any solar panel in low light conditions. This is because conventional solar panels need bright light and averagely high temperature to generate power on the other hand Heliatek panels can work in low light condition with low temperatures. According to an experiment Heliatek panels were able to generate more power overtime than conventional solar cells.

Though Heliatek has tried so hard to make a mark with its product but most of the solar power harnessing inventions fails because of the high installation cost and bulky nature. Let’s see how Helitak copes up with them.

Do drop in your comments and suggestions on the topic.

I think you will be surprised to know that there is a particular set of emoticons and smileys that is hidden and is not visible to chat users. Like many other chat clients Skype also has a set of hidden emoticons generally called as hidden Skype emoticons, which users can enter by typing the code associated with the smiley. I believe the people at Skype have made these emoticons hidden for a good reason as majority of them represent rude gestures like smoking and drinking. So, they are not good for the general daily conversation and it can also have a bad effect on children.

Apart from the normal hidden Skype emoticons, skype also provides country flags as emoticons. You can simply use them by typing (flag:xx) where xx represents the country code. These hidden emoticons are having high image quality and they do not show any signs of pixilation on the chat bar.

List of Hidden Skype Emoticons:

Please find below list of emoticons and smileys that are hidden in Skype:

Skype hidden emoticons

Hidden Skype flag icons:

For entering flags in the Skype chat bar you can simply use the pattern (flag:xx) where xx represents the country code. The country code is the alphabetical code for the country, for example the country code for India is IN so the flag emoticon for India would be (flag:IN).

Skype Country Codes

Don’t know your Country code? It’s okay if you don’t know your country code you can simply find out your country code by using the above image. Just find your country flag in the image and then check its column and row alphabets and it’s your country code.

Well that was all from me, if you know any other Skype emoticons then please share them in the comments section.

Do share your feedback or queries in the comments section below.

Happy Chatting :-)

Virtual Desktops are a blessing for those users who want to manage their cluttered desktops on Windows using a program or software which can help you to open multiple desktops virtually on Windows 7.  Today, in this article I am going to guide you on how to get Virtual Desktop on Windows 7 without straining your wallets.
Get Virtual Desktops on Windows 7
I am going to share four tools with you that could be used to get virtual desktop on Windows 7 absolutely free of cost.

WindowsPager

WindowsPager is one of the oldest tools for creating Virtual Desktop on Windows 7. It is very well integrated with Windows 7. The best thing about it is that it’s open source software. After installation it allows you to create 4 Desktops or 4 Workspaces.

Compatibility:

  • It works on Windows 7, Windows XP and Windows Vista.

Features:

  • It runs on both 32-bit and 64- bit operating system.
  • It is very small in size (550kB) and therefore you could easily run it from any USB drive.

All you have to do is to download the zip file from the link given below in Download Page. After download is complete, please unzip the file and place it at a defined location.  After this run the application. While running the application for first time. It will prompt you a window wherein you need to add your hotkey modifier (Alt or Shift or Control or Windows) and Desktop Specfier (Number or Function). You can select it as per your convenience.

Sysinternals’ Desktops

In case you do not want to open windows using the hot keys then all you need to do is to click on the Desktops Icon in system tray, Select the option that says select desktop. After this it will show you a thumbnail displaying the four windows.

To be honest Sysinteral’s Desktops is equivalently good as compared to WindowsPager and other apps, the only problem being that when you are loading the desktop for the first time it takes a long time to load, although later it becomes instantaneous.

Download Page: Please download Sysinternals’ Desktops from here.

nSpaces:

nSpaces is one of the best freeware softwares available in the market for creating virtual desktop in Windows 7.  The best feature about it is that it supports as many desktops as you want, that’s why its named as nSpaces, by default the number of desktops is set to four.

Features:

  • It creates multiple desktops on your computer (obviously).
  • It allows you to open different apps or programs on different virtual desktops, which avoids making your desktop look cluttered.

Hide Files Inside an Image Without any Software http://www.geekrevealed.com/2012/02/hide-files-inside-an-image-without-any-software.html http://www.geekrevealed.com/2012/02/hide-files-inside-an-image-without-any-software.html#comments Tue, 28 Feb 2012 02:47:01 +0000 Ankit http://www.geekrevealed.com/?p=1364 Most of us use third party applications to hide files on our machines, but today I am going to share a trick that you can use to hide files inside an image. Most of us use third party applications to hide files on our machines, but today I am going to share a trick that you can use to hide files inside an image. This trick doesn’t needs any third party software to hide the files, all you need for this trick is a file archive software like Winzip, Winrar or 7zip.

So here we go:

1. First of all create an archive of all the files that you want to hide.

Create an archive of all the files that you want to hide

2. After this press “windows+R” now in the Run window type “cmd”.

Compressed File to be hidden

3. Now a command prompt window will open up. Now here in this window you have to navigate to the root directory (where you have kept the files) and then type the command as:

Copy /B <imagefile.jpg> + <Archive_to_be_hidden.zip> <outputfile.jpg>

Command to be run for hiding the file

Here in the above command <imagefile.jpg> is the file that you are using for hiding the archive. <Archive_to_be_hidden.zip> is the archive that is to be hidden, it should be noted that it is not essential to have the archive in zip format, it can be any format like RAR, 7Zip, Tar, etc. <outputfile.jpg> is the file that will contain the image as well as the hidden files.

If you will open this output file with any image viewer then it will be displayed like an image but to see the files inside it you have to open it with winzip, winrar or whatever archiever you have used. For additional security you can also set a password on the archive.

4. After running this command you will see that it has generated the output file in your working directory.

Output file generated by the command

5. You can open the output image with winzip or winrar to see the hidden files.

Open the output image with winzip or winrar

So, this was the simplest way of hiding files inside an image. Please share your comments or suggestions in the comments section below.

While surfing internet many times it happens that you come across certain quotes in the form of images. But to make a note of the quote you have to type the quote in text form. One way of doing this is that you can simply write the quote in some text editor, but if the quote is too long then it becomes quiet difficult to type it.
Recently I also came across the same problem and that is when I researched about extracting Text from an Image. I have come across a nice website that helps you to extract text from an image.
Isn’t that great!

How does it Work?

Actually this website uses an OCR tool (Optical Character Recognition). Optical Character Recognition detects the text in an image as per the Optical Patterns of characters. It should be noted that this tool is based on Optical Recognition property which may be different from script to script. For instance the tool can easily detect English Text in an image however it fails to detect Hindi or Arabic Text.

You can visit this website here: <www.free-ocr.com>. To give you a further insight of exactly it works I would like to show you an image which consists of some text and later with help of tool we are able to extract the Text.

How to extract text from an image The image shown above is a screenshot from this website and the below image is the test result which the OCR tool has generated.
How to extract text from an image

Steps to Extract Text from an Image:

  1. Go to this website <www.free-ocr.com>
  2. Now in “Upload Image for OCR” section, Click on “Choose File” option.
  3. Now browse to the image from where you want to extract the Text.
  4. After this select the Language.
  5. Enter the Captcha.
  6. Now click on Send File.

The website would extract the Text and would provide it to you in Text Recognition Result. This is how extraction of Text from Image works.

Features:

I would like to highlight some other features of this service.

  • This is a free service so no need to pay or register.
  • It supports multiple formats like JPG, GIF, TIFF BMP or PDF.
  • Please note that the image size should be less than 2MB.
  • Please note that images should not be wider or higher than 5000 pixels.

Steve Jobs Quotes

  • “If you haven’t found it yet, keep looking. Don’t settle. As with all matters of heart, you’ll know when you find it. And, like any great relationship, it gets better and better as the years roll on.”
  • “When I was 17, I read a quote that went something like this: “If you live each day as if it was your last, someday you’ll most certainly be right.” It made an impression on me, since then, for past 33 years, I have looked in the mirror every morning and asked myself: “If today were the last day of my life, would I I want to do what I am about to do today?” And whenever the answer has been “No” for too many days in a row, I knew I need to change something.”
  • “We don’t get a chance to do many things, and everyone should be really excellent. Because this is our life.”
  • “Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life.”
  • “The mark of the immature man is that he wants to die nobly for a cause, while the mark of a mature man is that he wants to live humbly for one.”
  • “Remembering that you are going to die is the best way I know to avoid the trap of thinking you have done something to loose.”
  • “Design is not just what it looks like. Design is how it works.”
  • “No one wants to die. Even people who want to go to heaven don’t want to die to get there. And yet death is the destination we all share. No one has ever escaped it. And that is as it should be, because Death is very likely the single beat invention of life. It is Life’s change agent. I clears out the old to make way for the new. Right now the new is you, but someday not too long from now, you will gradually become the old and be cleared away. Sorry to be so dramatic, but it is quiet true.”
  • “Being the richest man in the cemetery doesn’t matter to me. Going to bed at night saying we’ve done something wonderful, that’s what matters to me”
  • “That’s been one of my mantras focus and simplicity. Simple can be harder than complex: You have to work hard to get your thinking clean to make it simple. But it’s worth it in the end because once you get there, you can move mountains.”
  • “I’m convinced that about half of what separates the successful entrepreneurs from the non-successful once is pure perseverance”
  • “Innovation distinguishes between a leader and a follower.”
  • “Sometimes when you innovate, you make mistakes. It is best to admit them quickly, and get on with improving your other innovations.”
  • “You can’t connect the dots looking forward, you can only connect them looking backwards. So you have to trust that the dots will somehow connect in your future. You have to trust in something your gut, destiny, life, karma, whatever. This approach has never let me down, and it has made all the difference in my life.”
  • “I think if you do something and it turns out pretty good, then you should go do something else wonderful, not dwell on it for too long. Just figure out what’s next.”
